Cloud Egress and Data Exfiltration: The Hole in Both Budget and Security
Most organizations focus on protecting what comes into the cloud, but egress, the data going out, is where information actually disappears. Cloud egress and data exfiltration deserve far more attention than they usually get, because the exit door is both a security gap and a budget gap at the same time.
What happened
Data siphoned out through an API, massive downloads from storage, or even a perfectly "legitimate" export can all look like ordinary activity. That is exactly what makes exfiltration hard to catch: it blends into normal usage. At the same time, egress is a cost component that arrives as a surprise on the bill. When someone pulls a large volume of data out, it is simultaneously a security event and a financial event.
Why it matters
Because exfiltration mimics normal traffic, traditional inbound-focused controls miss it. And because egress drives unexpected cost, an unnoticed data pull can damage both your security posture and your cloud spend before anyone reacts. Tying the two together, treating a cost spike as a possible security signal, gives teams an earlier, cheaper warning than waiting for a breach to be confirmed.
What to do
- Monitor outbound traffic and detect anomalous data volumes leaving the environment.
- Apply limits on sharing and downloads to reduce easy exfiltration paths.
- Correlate egress cost to a specific identity or application so you can answer "who and what" quickly.
- Make outbound monitoring part of cloud governance, not only a SOC concern.
Egress monitoring should be a first-class part of cloud governance. Watching what leaves your environment, and being able to attribute it, is as important as guarding what comes in.
